June 2019…

Kia Ora, and welcome to RIMS NZ & PI, and my first President’s Letter..!!!

One of the reasons I’m so excited about our new Chapter and what it means for all of our members, is that I have the absolute privilege of working alongside fellow Directors Kate Beddoe (Vice-President), Kerry Bakkerus, Darren Evans, and Greg Lazzaro. The collective passion, drive, energy, and commitment amongst us, to making a meaningful and tangible difference to our region’s resilience and risk profession, is inspiring and energising. It’s a journey that I am very much looking forward to undertaking with my fellow Directors and with each and every one of our members and contributors.

Our journey to date…

As many of you will know, NZ & PI was formerly part of RIMS Australasia, which Kate brought to NZ about seven years ago. RIMS itself is a global not-for-profit organisation, with over 10,000 members across more than 60 countries. So a massive network and a truly global reach. As a result of the success and momentum we’ve had in NZ in recent years, the global Board approved the formation of its 80th global Chapter in January - NZ & PI – which is an amazing opportunity for our region’s risk profession, allowing us to strategically focus on our local members’ needs and priorities, with US support.

Our wonderful founding sponsors…

Given that we’re a not-for-profit organisation, and to enable our members to keep attending our risk roundtables and Diversity in Risk events free of charge, we couldn’t do any of this without the incredible support of our founding sponsors – ACC, AIG, Allianz, KPMG, Marsh, and Willis Towers Watson. Our sponsors’ support and involvement is very special to us, and we absolutely couldn’t do it without them.

Our theme for the year…

Our theme for the year is “building resilience” – individual resilience, organisational resilience, and the resilience of NZ Inc... Seeking to contribute to the strength of our region, and enabling people and businesses to cope with and respond to the disrupted world that we now live and operate in.

For us, as risk professionals, our ability to be true business enablers has never been greater, as the effective management of risk - enabling our businesses to be more resilient - becomes a critical component of organisational success. Unless our businesses, and our people, are able to be resilient – to positively adapt in the face of challenging and changing conditions and to develop sustainable strategies that create new forms of value - our organisations run the risk of becoming irrelevant and will inevitably fail.

So – in this context – for myself and my fellow RIMS Directors, determining our theme for the year was not a difficult task….! In fact, it felt like an imperative. It may very well need to be our theme for decades to come….

Bringing our theme to life and offering amazing events for our member…

In terms of how we bring our theme to life for all of you, we’re about half way through a busy events schedule for the year.
We kicked the events calendar off for the year with the Marsh Global Risk Report in February at the Northern Club, closely followed by our launch event at Orams Marine in March, at which we shared our strategy, purpose, vision, values, and Whakatauki. Since then we’ve held an energy sector risk roundtable, two Diversity in Risk (DIR) events on accountable leadership and D&I in financial services, a general risk roundtable in relation to supply chain risk, and we’ve got our mini fraud film festival in early July. We’re also really excited to be launching our Diversity in Risk programme in Wellington in June, with Wayne Goodman and an esteemed panel of speakers discussing unconscious bias and its links to D&I and organisational resilience.

I’m personally really excited about the Wellington launch – our Auckland DIR mentoring programme has now grown to over 140 risk professionals across more than 40 organisations, which is such an amazing response, and I can’t wait to extend this into Wellington and bring some of the benefits of the programme to our wider risk community.

We’ve got an exciting line up of events for the remainder of the year, so keep tuned to our website for details. Not least of which is our inaugural Summit on 23 September – promising to be an amazing event – check out our Summit website for details…!!!

Extending our reach to the Pacific Islands…

We’re looking forward to extending our reach to the Pacific Islands in 2020, which we will do with the invaluable support of our sponsors and various of our members who have strong connections in the region.

Our Whakatauki, purpose, vision and values…

Can I please encourage you to take a look at the “About Us” tab on this website, where you’ll learn all about the journey to create our Whakatauki and logo, working with the wonderful Vern and Angell Rosieur, and our purpose, vision, and values. This will give you a real sense of what RIMS NZ & PI is all about - what we stand for, what we’re seeking to achieve, and our commitment to our members and the region.

Get in touch…

Finally - we love to hear from our members and those who are interested in what we’re doing, so feel free to get in touch. See the “Contact Us” tab for details.

PS… I have to give a special shout-out to Kerry, who’s worked tirelessly alongside our website developer to bring our RIMS NZ & PI Website to life. An amazing result. Thanks so much Kerry…!!!
